Orlando International: The Closest Airport to Disney World

Three airports serve Central Florida, and only one of them is anywhere near Walt Disney World. Orlando International — MCO — is roughly half an hour's driving nearer the parks than the next option and about an hour nearer than the third. If you are choosing on driving time alone, the question is already answered. The other two are worth understanding anyway: a flight that happens to suit you is how people end up at the wrong end of the state.

Every distance and time below is routed rather than remembered: road distances and free-flow driving times to the four Walt Disney World park gates, to the Kissimmee US-192 corridor and to the resorts we look after. Free-flow means no traffic model, so treat each figure as the good case and add for a late-afternoon landing. Our guide to Walt Disney World covers what sits where once you are inside the resort.

The short answer

Orlando International (MCO) is the closest airport to Walt Disney World. The four theme-park gates sit about 20 to 26 road miles from the terminals, roughly 29 to 37 minutes with clear roads, and Disney Springs is closer still at around 18 miles.

Orlando Sanford (SFB) is roughly 53 to 59 miles from the same gates, about an hour to an hour and a quarter. Tampa International (TPA) is about 77 to 80 miles, an hour and a half to an hour and forty minutes. Both are perfectly usable airports. Neither is close.

One caveat about the phrase “the Disney main gate”: there isn't one. Walt Disney World is around seven miles across, and from MCO the nearest gate — Hollywood Studios, about 20.5 miles — and the furthest — the Magic Kingdom, about 26 — differ by a third. Any article handing you a single number has quietly picked one, so everything here is a spread.

Orlando International (MCO)

MCO is run by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority and is the airport almost everyone flying to Orlando uses. It is really two airports: Terminals A and B share one building on Jeff Fuqua Boulevard, and Terminal C, further south on Jeff Fuqua Boulevard South, has its own roads, car parks and rental desks. There is a train station on Station Loop Road too. Car hire is available in both complexes, which is a good reason to know which terminal your flight uses.

Getting to your villa

The routed fastest way out leaves on the airport's South Access Road and joins SR-417, the Central Florida GreeneWay, a toll road. From there it is about 19 miles and roughly 25 minutes free-flow to the middle of the Kissimmee US-192 corridor. On our routing the resorts we manage sit between about 19 and 30 road miles from the terminals, so nobody staying with us has a long first drive — the villas along the Kissimmee corridor are the closest of all to the airport.

If you would rather not use the toll roads, you can. Leave the airport towards SR-528, the Beachline, and join I-4 west: the routed toll-free drive to the Magic Kingdom comes out roughly 22 minutes longer, and roughly 26 minutes longer if you are heading for US-192. We name the roads and leave the tolls to you — how a hire car handles them varies from desk to desk.

Orlando Sanford (SFB)

Sanford is a real international airport — U.S. Customs and Border Protection lists it as a Class A port of entry, on Red Cleveland Boulevard — but it is a small one, used by a limited number of carriers, and geography is what matters. Sanford is north-east of Orlando in Seminole County; Walt Disney World is south-west of the city. You land on the far side of Orlando from where you are going, and all of that extra distance is extra driving.

Getting to your villa from Sanford

Routed, the Disney gates are about 53 to 59 miles and an hour to an hour and a quarter free-flow, and the resorts we manage are between about 51 and 62 miles out. The fastest paths use SR-417 or SR-429, both tolled; the toll-free alternative is straight down I-4, which is actually fewer miles and a few minutes slower. None of that makes Sanford a mistake — it makes it roughly half an hour further each way than MCO.

Tampa International (TPA)

Tampa is the outlier: a west-coast airport, which by its own description sits five miles west of downtown Tampa on the east shore of Tampa Bay, about 77 to 80 road miles from the Disney gates. Its own directions from the Orlando theme parks are refreshingly short — I-4 west, then I-275 south, the same roads in reverse — and of the three it is the only airport whose routed fastest path uses no toll road.

Getting to your villa from Tampa

Allow about an hour and a half to an hour and forty minutes in normal traffic to the parks, and roughly 65 to 80 miles to the resorts we look after. The spread matters more here than anywhere else, because Tampa approaches from the west: the homes at the I-4 and US-27 end of the corridor are the first you reach, and the Kissimmee ones the last.

Which airport for which resort

Where you are staying changes the answer less than you might expect — with one exception.

• MCO, for almost everybody — every resort we manage is inside about 30 road miles of it, and most are inside 25.
• Windsor Hills and Storey Lake — on our routing the closest of all to MCO, at roughly 19 and 21 road miles: the shortest arrival drive here, and both on the Kissimmee side.
• ChampionsGate and Reunion — the I-4 and US-27 end of the corridor. ChampionsGate in particular is, on our routing, the furthest of our resorts from MCO at about 30 miles and the closest to Tampa at about 65 — the one place here where flying into Tampa is a real argument.
• Anywhere, if Sanford is the flight you can get — add roughly half an hour each way, and check your car-hire desk is open when you land.
• Tampa, only at the US-27 end — from a home on the Kissimmee side it is the longest airport-to-door drive of any combination here.

Arrival-day tips

Three things make arriving at a villa different from a hotel, and all three happen on the drive in.

The first is food. A private home has a kitchen and, on arrival night, nothing in it. Most guests either stop at a supermarket on the way in or have a delivery timed for after check-in; our guide to eating in Orlando and stocking the villa kitchen covers both, including the awkward part about delivering to a gated community.

The second is the gate. Most of the resorts we manage are gated, and access is arranged for your arrival rather than assumed, so have your directions and gate details to hand before you leave the airport rather than at the barrier with tired children in the back. If the flight is delayed, tell us — a late arrival is a normal thing to plan around.

The third is the dull one. A long-haul trip with a hire car, a private house and hurricane season in the calendar is worth insuring, and what a policy should actually cover is written up separately. If your dates are not fixed yet, when you come will shape the holiday far more than which airport you land at.
